Originally founded in Olathe, Kansas, Island Radar was established by Tom Hilleary. Hilleary’s prior successes included over 20 US and International patents which brought advances in technology to numerous industries. Hilleary founded Island Radar with a vision of improving railroad crossing safety by employing emerging technologies.
By utilizing industry leading technology designed and manufactured by Wavetronix LLC, Hilleary’s systems caught the attention of several Class 1 Railroads and the Federal Rail Administration. Working closely with BNSF and other Class 1 railroads through testing and proving his system, Hilleary established the use of a redundant radar system at grade level crossings to improve the crossing safety at four quadrant gate locations leading to Island Radar gaining FRA approval (CFR 49 subpart H approved product) for level crossing safety.
Recognizing that Wavetronix and Island Radar shared a complementary common vision to improve traffic safety and efficiency, Wavetronix purchased Island Radar in 2018. Wavetronix quickly added senior staff to the Island Radar team to bring the advantages of advanced engineering development as well as market development and support to the company.
Now located in Springville, Utah, Island Radar continues to champion these early adopter applications involving BNSF, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific Railroads and many transit railroads. The company continues to develop applications for vehicle detection warning systems at railroad crossings; blocked or obstructed crossings; train detection at diamond crossover interlockers, and for systems at railroad quiet zones and high-speed rail crossings. Wavetronix and Island Radar’s proprietary technologies are protected by US and international patents, additional patents pending.Island Radar is a proud supporting member of the following groups and associations that advance safety and efficiency in transportation.AREMA, FRA, ITE, RSSI, TRB, IMSA, ITSA
